Evaluation of Narrative and Genre

Narrative

The full narrative is outlined in the 'Main Pitch' post.
The opening starts the narrative relatively effectively. The narration gives hints to towards the plot and the personalities of the characters, whilst also raising elements of enigma. The characters being in costume and being in regular clothing shows the audience that there is a divide between the characters as themselves and the characters as their hero personas, though it could be debated that the simplicity of the costumes makes this slightly unclear. The dialogue of the characters gives reference to other characters within the story and establishes their sibling relationship and the dynamic within it. However the opening does neglect to give concrete reference to the universe of the story and secondary characters, instead only focusing on the two main characters.

Genre

The opening adheres strongly to the family film genre. The main characters are of a similar age to the target audience, the setting (a play-park) is a place children typically visit often, the dialogue is realistic and the superhero elements relate to the stereotype that children like heroes (as seen on children's television: PJ Masks, Young Justice, Teen Titans, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir, etc). The music has an upbeat, almost bouncy, tune to it, symbolising the energetic nature of children and their boundless creativity. We could have improved our film in terms of genre had we had the skills, technology and budget to animate the story in CGI. However, due to the various restrictions, we could not do this, menaing we had no choice but to film in live-action.

Moodboards

Hello! For our project, we have designed some moodboards to give us inspiration and insight into the aesthetic of our film: The first mood board is representative of what elements we want to include in our film, notably childhood wonder, exploration and, most importantly, imagination. They also depict the type of mise-en-scene we want to present in our film opening. For example, we plan to use everyday clothing as well as colourful costumes to show the visual contrast between 'real' and 'imagination' as well as a means to represent our characters in a childish but endearing way. As for setting, we hope to use a playground, possibly with a woods or forest-like area behind it to add to the general feeling of outside play and adventure, where the characters can use the play equipment as props to act out the stories in their imagination. We also wanted to include aspects of family by having the main characters being children of a young, pre-teen age. The mood bo...

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

Evaluation Explain about how you went about the three compulsory aspects of this exercise - shot reverse shot, 180-degree rule and match on action editing. The compulsory editing aspects of the preliminary task were all followed correctly throughout the entirety of the video. The shot reverse shot features the two primary actors (Claire and Tilly) sitting face-to-face at a desk when t hey have a conversation about how Claire had been stealing stationery from people’s lockers around the school.  The camera flicked between them numerous times varying between close up and medium shots. These shots show the facial expressions of our actors and help to pull the story line together. The 180-degree rule was a little bit tougher for us to follow, as we had to re-shoot the opening shot as we had accidentally broken the rule. However, the re-shoot meant that the rule was no longer broken and the editing could be completed efficiently.  The final compulsory aspect wa...

Bridge to Terabithia - Textual Analysis (2)

Textual Analysis of a Film Opening:  Bridge To Terabithia Bridge to Terabithia tells the story of Jesse Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) and Leslie Burke (Anna-Sophia Robb) and their vivid imaginations, creativity and their growing friendship as they face evils in their everyday lives, such as facing a bully or Jesse's strained relationship with his Dad. The film uses special effects and drawn animation to create a whimsical world that draws audiences in and keeps them invested. 1) Conventions The opening of 'Bridge to Terabithia', firstly, adheres to general film conventions by including the logo animations for two production companies involved with the development at the beginning of the opening, these being Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. The clip starts with an opening establishing shot of what we presume is our main character's house, outside of which is a truck and a small green house. From this visual information, and the size and architectural st...
